Seven Readers !!...
Firing Carmen Aristegui d e MVS is not a minor issue. This is the end of an information space which had been characterized by maintaining an open, critical and focused in only for about anything in the interests of the audience who listened to him. This is a very important and a very hard blow against freedom of expression in Mexico.
In case any of you still do not know that was what happened in the last issue of the news of Carmen Aristegui in MVS news last Friday, here's the video:
The issue on whether the protest was not made by the members of the PT, led by Gerardo Fernandez Norona - which I think was completely out of shape - but the fact that Carmen Aristegui has made a legitimate question: "Has or not, Alcoholism problems President Calderón "and ask - to close to the subject - to clarify presidency the matter.
Calderon Alcoholism is not a private matter, as many would handle it, is really important. Someone suffering from this disease (and we must emphasize that this is a disease) can cause serious problems making decisions of concern to the nation. Thus the rise of the issue to light what is relevant is to clarify to dispel any doubt. How well Aristegui said in democracies around the world are calling for studies to know the health condition who heads the country's destiny. There is nothing offensive when someone is experiencing a phenomenon of this nature - aimed Aristegui - much less when asked to clarify an issue that concerns us all.
According to the statement issued this morning by MVS, Carmen Aristegui was fired for the following reason:
"Last Friday, 4 February, the journalist Carmen Aristegui valid gave a presumption, in violation of our ethical code and by refusing to provide, as requested by the company, a public apology, we decided to terminate our contractual relationship" .
But if we listen to the audio of what happened, Carmen never gave such an assumption valid. On the contrary, questioned and opened the door to Los Pinos to finish once and for all the buzz about Calderon's disease. If the presidency would have been smart, would have sufficed with a statement - with accompanying medical certificates - clarifying the matter and giving the successful claims made by the opposition. But it was not. Information has not been confirmed (Aristegui should be the first to do so) spoke of the journalist refused to read a letter made in Los Pinos which apologized for having provided information about alcoholism Calderón. That was - as all these versions - which cost him his dismissal by MVS.
In the world of journalism and social networks Aristegui firing has deepened. Not only - I repeat - the blow to freedom of expression if not once again a media company ignores the right of the audience. It is not only a person who seemingly compelling justification loses his job, but it is the loss of an area in which the listener could find plurality and intelligence (the table with Sergio Aguayo, Lorenzo Meyer and Denise Dresser, also lost) and a different vision, ethics, and well supported by what happens in the country.
Everything seems to indicate that it will be increasingly difficult to have a free press in the country. As they are approaching the elections in the State of Mexico in the middle of this year and presidential campaigns begin in late 2011, the information control will increase. Grantees private media and the government seem to be aimed at creating conditions under which information will not touch powerful interests at stake in the months to come. What they have done with Aristegui seems to be a message to all journalists in the country dare to question or seek clarification of vital importance to the nation. It shows what you can do in the coming months.
confirmed, everything has been handled, the only thing left is to demand the return of Carmen Aristegui in your space. It's the most decent managers can do to compensate MVS his now tarnished image, the only thing to do if they really are a company that puts the public interest over private (something that should be inherent in any communication company) .
The outlook for the exercise of a free press in Mexico, today turns black.
Monday ...
... well ...
